Story Bird: Abby
Abby was a beautiful and loving Umbrella Cockatoo that I brought home when
she was three months old. She rapidly become ruler of the roost in our
home and we completely and utterly adored her. When she was just two years old,
Abby became very sick and had to stay at the vet's for a whole week. She got to
come home for the weekend, but had to return Monday morning...Tuesday morning
Abby died. The necropsy revealed that string from her favorite frayed rope toy
had lodged in her intestine and the irritation had caused a hole which allowed
the bacteria to flow to other parts of her body. I now have her sister, Chloe,
and when I got Chloe (she was two years old)...I was informed that she, too, had
suffered from string lodging in her intestine, but she was able to pass the
string....however, the vet still kept her and had to pull the string the rest of
the way out. Needless to say, we only use sisal rope now. |
